Reliance Communications Plans on 4G Services

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, formerly known as Infotel Broadband services, is a provider of digital, broadband and mobile telephony services in India. The company aims to deploy LTE technology to provide 4G services on pan-India level. Reliance Jio is based in Mumbai and was incorporated in the year 2007.

What’s so different about 4G?

4G or Fourth Generation of Cellular Communications is an advanced technology designed to deliver the fastest mobile internet experience. It is almost ten times faster than the current 3G network speeds. As a result users will be able to do things faster and consumer more media on their device.

Primary benefits of 4G

  • Downloading and Streaming of videos will be at a much higher speed

  • Multi-player gaming facility without any disruptions

  • Strong indoor coverage with enhanced voice quality and data speeds up to 50 Mbps

  • Clear visual video calling without delay in sounds or pixelation

Prospective Approach of Jio

Designed to enhance the digital life of Indians, the Jio services consist of an ecosystem that includes smart devices, useful applications and powerful broadband networks. The media offerings of Jio include libraries and programs of recorded and live music, events, movies, live television, sports, etc. In the coming months, the company has committed itself to cover 90% of India’s population while providing its services across the rural as well as urban sectors of the country.

Roll-out of 4G services

Of the 22 circles in the country, Reliance Jio holds spectrum in 800 MHz in 10 circles and 1800 MHz in 6 circles respectively. Although the company has started rolling out 4G services across various circles slowly, it is fully prepared for launching 4G voice and high-speed data services on a large scale. One of the research report suggests that Reliance Jio could be launch its 4G services in August 2016 with its first plan ‘Freedom’ including free voice services bundled with data. These data plans are also designed to be cheaper as compared to what is currently offered in the market.

Market Investment and Response

As of now Reliance’s investment in the 4G venture has been nearly INR 34,000 crores. Even with the pilot launch there has been a download of 13 million GB of data by 70 lakh users, as suggested by the company data reports. The company plans to offer its 4G services through LTE (Long Term Evolution) network and its voice services through VoLTE (voice over LTE) as this network supports higher call quality and faster services. According to Morgan Stanley, a US-based brokerage firm, Reliance Jio could earn $1.7 billion in revenue towards the end of 2016-17 with an expected rise in the company’s annual revenue to $6.69 billion (INR 45,492 crore) by March 2020.

Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries has stated “At Reliance Jio, we have built an entire ecosystem that will allow Indians to live the digital life to the fullest. This transformational ecosystem consists of broadband connectivity, devices and powerful applications and services which will be available to every consumer in India”
